Shadow4108 Sep 24, 2008 08:26 PM

Anyone have their snakes microchipped? Offer to do it or have it done at time of sale before shipping?

I have one of my snakes chipped--- Cost $30 ....

I have only seen a handfull of ppl. that chip snakes before they are sold-- there was a guy at our local show --- didn't really affect the price of the snake or my desire to buy it but i'm sure it could come in handy at some point....

I know Bob Clark offers it and so does Mike Wilbanks of constrictors unlimited.

When they started trials for human use -- they discovered that those microchips were causing tumors in 1-10% of the dogs and lab mice that they were tested in. 1% not too bad - but up to 10% I'd rather not -- I even chose not to put one in my dog.

I have worked in a couple of vet clinics and kennels. While, I don't know much about that statistic, I do know for a fact 1 in 10 dogs will develop cancer. And none I have seen yet have even been micro chipped. And I can tell you that in our vet office most of the strays brought in were returned because they were chipped. But I'm not on here to debate this issue, I was just curious as to who does it. I would imagine it would come as a very valuable time investment for anyone with a valuable collection. If they were ever stolen, that serves as proof of ownership.

As a practicing small animal veterinarian, I have implanted many microchips and have never seen any associated problems other than the animal being quickly returned their owner if lost (can that be considered a problem?) Doing a little research on Veterinary Information Network I found that in over 10 million plus microchipped animals there have only been 4-6 documented cases of sarcomas found in dogs and none absolutely linked to microchip in cats. There isn't any hard real evidence that microchipping causes cancer and the benefits far outweigh the "risks". My $0.02 worth (for what it's worth)
