housing together

ninj726 Sep 26, 2008 11:01 PM

ok, I asked about feeding my male hog, and someone said that it is bad to keep hogs together. I have a hatchling m/f together in a ten gallon tank, and I feed them separately. what does everyone think? I got the female from the Great Valley Serpentarium in Lodi, and when I bought the female, I asked the owner (he breeds all of the snakes) if it was ok to keep her in the same cage as my male. He said that it should be fine, and that he houses all of his hatchlings together. What does everyone think? Your replies will be much appreciated.

I think as a good rule of thumb, if you can house them separately then do so. That being said, a lot of people do keep hatchlings together, and in practice you can do so. Like you mention, make sure you feed them separately. In terms of illnesses, or diseases, or even stress, these things and the risks can be exacerbated with cage mates.

i have in the past with no problems especialy for the first few weeks after they hatch. Of course feed them seperate and i always give them a quick rinse with warm water before putting them back together so i dont have to worry about the scent of food on them. just a precaution.

you might get away with it without any problems. you might get away with it for a while and then fail. I was housing two hatchlings together and feeding in separate containers, etc. They got along great for almost a year. Then one day, I found one had eaten the other.
