Box Turtles Post Mating

YOY Sep 27, 2008 11:41 AM

My 3 toed Boxies mated for the first time and I'm curious as to if there is a problem. Post mating the males tail is very swolen. Is that normal?

The event took over 4 hours...is that a bit too long? I heard that 3 hours and not more is the normal. Did the dirty deed not occur? LOL!

I put them in water to drink an gave them some food.

Can I get some insight here?

Thanks!

It looks almost as though the male's tail is prolapsed. Starting to worry here...

Let the guy soak in shallow water.

Something like this happened to one of mine just a couple of weeks ago: apparently he got some dirt and debris stuck to his penis and was having trouble retracting. I rinsed him off and let him soak for a while and he was back to normal within a few minutes.

On a side note, this was the first time (that I've observed) that this particular male has been successful in mating, so maybe he needs to work on his post-coital technique.

You said it looked like it was prolapsed but it is not uncommon for the male turtle's penis to not fully retract for a time. He has been pushing it out all this time and probably doesn’t have the strength to pull it back it.

Not to worry-keep it moist and clean and keep all other turtles away! I have heard of male turtles getting their penis bitten off! You can try hemorrhoid ointment and even sugar water to reduce swelling. If it is not fully retracted in 6-12 hours then it's time to go to the vet. Tess
