Silkworms slightly bigger than head ok?

jsp228 Sep 27, 2008 01:56 PM

I know prey items are suppose to be no bigger then the space between the eyes. But I was told I can't have silk worms sent that are of that size that will make it through shipping. Are these soft boddied worms ok to feed to my baby dragon if they are about 1/5 inch bigger than the space between her eyes when turned horizontally?

silkworms, because they are soft bodied, can be fed even if their length is longer than the space between the dragon's eyes. Some say it doesn't matter the size with silkworms but I go more more than twice the length of the space between a dragons' eyes.

At first, just feed a few silkworms...sometimes dragons will gorge on these and end up vomiting them all up. So 3-6 for their first meal, plus salads etc, then more freely the next day if this is fine.

Older dragons can handle full sized (roughly 3-4" worms) easily, even the larger hornworms too. But dragons under 15" feed small to medium silkworms and horn worms.

Thanks, My dragon did gorge himself today. He ate about 8 worms. I'm going to definetly not feed him till late tomorrow. His belly is looking really big and I hope I didnt feed him too much. Thanks for the help, silkworms >> crickets by far =).

I wouldn't use silks as the sole live food for babies. Crickets should be gutloaded which makes them the most nutritious bug for a growing dragon. When your dragons are adults you can consider switching them to supers and silks full time.
