Cages made of MDF?

Slacker6848 Sep 27, 2008 06:10 PM

is there any pros or cons to building cages out of mdf? I was thinking about making some racks out of it since i have access to a CNC machine set up for MDF and that's what I'm use to working with at the job. Weight isnt a factor too much since i'll be putting them on casters

Thanks
Zack

I built some simple racks using mdf,its not on casters..but its strong and fun to build..and more $$ left for animals.
Really it would be sweet to buy prebuilt racks with little windows...oh heck I can build those also.

thats cool, I'm just trying to find 48" totes for the rack so i have measurments to start up the drawing, I'm going to laminate the inside of the rack all black and put some nice formica laminate or something on the outside so you cant see any of the screws and i'm going to grouve the walls of the frame to slide in the shalves for extra sturdyness and easier to line up since it'll be cut out on a cnc, anyone know where i can find some 48" totes for a reasonable price?

Thanks
Zack

I was a Carpenter by trade for years until I ruined my back (fusion surgery & all that). Anyway I worked with plywood then in later years OSB was used. OSB replaced plywood for roof sheathing, the decking / sub floor. I never remember at anytime using MDF(Medium Density Fiberboard)for any thing in the trade. How is it to work with? Does it release toxins? I believe OSB does as it degrades toxins are released. I won't use anything but plywood or solid wood products right now. Curious how is MDF to work with and anything you can tell about it ? Thanks
