breeding ball pythons

hiimsteveduh Sep 27, 2008 10:21 PM

i have a normal male that wieghs 550 grams and is about a year and a half maybe older and has sperm plugs and i picked up a normal female today, who is 1120 grams. are they old enoguh to breed? curiosity got the better of me and i let them go together for a few mins. the male got pretty scared and then got up the balls (haha get it) to go check out the female and the female basicly sorta ignored him because she is use to living with other balls. the female seems sort of brave and she lieks to be held almost (its really wierd iv never seen a snake act like her) and i dont think she would hav any problem settling in and having babies this year. what do you think?

i think females have to be 2000 grams before they will breed.

Come on, you have never bred Balls, but you are giving advice, and incorrect advice at that, about breeding Balls? I would clam up if I was you...get off the 'puter and do some reading.

From what I've read females need to be MINIMUM 1000 grams, but overall size, not just wieght is important too! A 1 year old that is power-fed can reach a fat 1000 grams, but still be too young for RESPONSIBLE breeding.

Try reading up on the topic some more, my guess is if you don't know the proper weight, you probably don't know everything you need to about everything else there is to breeding balls. The more you read the better chance you have of success.

I like 'The Complete Ball Python' by Kevin McCurly, I think there's a post on here about it.

Good luck, hope this helps

she is 3 years old. and i know a lot about breeding the only thing was that everyone i asked has a differn't opinion about breeding wieght for the female. some said 800 other 1000 others 1200 others 2000 grams. so i was just double checking to see what other people thought about breeding wieght.

Didn't mean to offend. and you're right there is a lot of inconsistancy as far as weight goes. I've got a 3yr old about the same size, I'm waiting 'til next year at the advice of a pro I know.
