ASF breeding issue

Gimptafied Sep 29, 2008 05:26 AM

So here's the situation, I have 1.3 ASFs. One female breeds after her pups are weaned, one breeds right after giving birth, and female #3 has never bred. My question is, how can I get her producing? Are there any tricks I don't know or is there a chance she may be infertile? Thanks in advance.

My rodent rules:

1 - Don't produce - fed off
2 - Kill babies - fed off
3 - Jumpy - fed off
4 - Get sick - fed off
5 - Bite me - whacked on cement, then fed off

Yeah, I've considered "the rules" but she helps take care of the litters and is such a good little non-mom. These guys are hard to come by here though so I was hoping there might be something I don't know about to get her to breed. I've never had a rodent not produce before but I guess my time has come. How often are rodents sterile?

Well, if she's actually helping I'm sure you could bend the rules a little. At least until you raise up her replacement?

I don't see many that don't produce at all. But they are out there, at least in mice and rats, never kept/raised ASF's.

Found her dead this morning with blood around her bottom. She had started to look a little plump and I hoped she might be pregnant. Guess things didn't work out though. I'm just glad I found her before the others started snacking.

Part of the intent of my "rules" is to nip this sort of thing in the bud. If there is something that could be transmitted one way or another, the sooner it's culled out the less the risk. Sounds like your problem resolved itself.

Yeah, I justified not feeding her off because she was more attentive to the litters than the breeding females. I learned my lesson and also found 2 local breeders of ASFs. I picked up two groups of 1.4 and so should have plenty now. If they stop fighting...
