For substrate for Eastern Hogs? I aquired a WC a little bit ago and am temporarily using topsoil. What's the best way to go?
Thanks.

Paper towels for newbies with lots of hides until they are established feeders and thru with quarintine. WC stay in quar. until they are finished with their deworming treatments and get a clean fecal.
I do not use topsoil because it molds and normally is not sterile so it has little buggies in it.
Also, in response to your fatty liver question several post down, easterns live just fine on a rodent diet, though I prefer to feed them as little hair as possible, so rat pinks work well. Any snake that is over fed can develop fatty liver. Hoggies are just prone to being overfed more since they process rodents differently then a rodent feeding snake.

I need to get it to the vets then, yes?

I knew that reptiles in general are prone to fatty liver if over fed. Just assumed this was specific to Hogs.
Thanks for the response.

I have an adult female that will be 4 years old next July. She has been fed nothing but mice/rats since day 1. They seem to get a lot more out of the rodents, so once they are past their active growing period (where they can really use all that energy), you do have to cut back or they will likely develop problems. She is about as big as my corn snake but eats half as much as the corn does lol. The corn gets weaned rats or jumbo mice whereas the hog gets half grown mice or a rat fuzzy.

Thanks much

What substrate do you switch to after they become accliminated? Or do you stay with paper towels? Thanks again.
Quig
Aspen because they love to burrow. I just make sure they do not ingest any when feeding them.

But find that there is no problem feeding on it (this conclusion is based on two decades' experience and literally hundreds of animals kept on aspen from hatching-old age)....use the finely shredded stuff (e.g. L/M) if you can get it.

The Avalanche has already started-it is too late for the pebbles to vote....
Cell-sorb...stuff works great! No smells anymore, and it can be scooped like cat litter. Safe to feed on.
