McCurley Vs. Barker

exoticball Sep 29, 2008 02:29 PM

what book is better info wise? The Complete Ball Python by Kevin McCurley or Pythons of the World Volume 2 by Dave and Tracy Barker. Also if you have one or the other would you recommend picking up the other anyways for a good read or will most the info be the same in both???

Get them both-but if you MUST confine yourself to one, then get the Barker's book.

I have both,

No contest, the Barker book is the bible, covers ball pythons from A to Z and then some...

and although it took almost 2 months to get to me because of shipping errors, the book is great. As far as content, its inline with what I expected. Photos are amazing, and plentiful, many many morph bios and photos.....I've not picked up the VPI book....but am going to now...

compare kevins and vpi's, you will understand why most everyone is saying to get the vpi book.

it's updated (2006) and covers just about everything you want to know about BP's

I have the book by McCurley and am thinking of adding another book to the libary but am not sure if I should or not. If I do I want more collected info, not paying a high price just for pictures. I can see pics really easy plus I have already paid for McCurley and there are a lot of pictures to keep me dreaming of different combos for some time. I do not mind spending a little cash as long as the info is worth it. I also understand that there will be some repetition between the new book and McCurley but I want a good handful of new info as well, at least enough to make it worth the book.

So should I get Ross or VIP, or is there some other book that would be recommend?

I started colllecting reptile books back in the mid 70's. Just remember one thing. Books don't die or need to be cleaned or fed and can always be referred to if you forget something. If you want a general care, morph, and breeding book you already have it. If you want a "no frills" breeding book get Dick Ross's book. If you want to basically know everything there is to know about ball pythons, evolution, care, taxonimy, folklore, breeding, morphs, etc, etc, etc get Dave & Tracy's book. Very, very few reptile books are a bad investment. Most will pay for themselves in what you learn and get out of them.

you mentuioned Ross'

..let's just say I got the three "NEW" books the last few years and I learned nothing actually....

......I don't remember what all is in each book and I do need to reread them all again soon......

I'll just add......

I never met Richard Ross.....

I have met David Barker a number of times.......

I will never argue with Dave and I know he is probably the most learned man in the game.......

I also know he doesn't come in here......

Why Not?........LOL.......I wonder........

......good luck.......and do like I do.ask my mother to buy me a book every year for Christmas........

....really....
