Anyone else randomly hatch one of these?

lavenderalbino Sep 30, 2008 10:19 AM

We hatch hundreds of balls a year but so far nothing along the lines of this? This little girl randomly hatched in a pied to het pied clutch?

She has significantly increased dark pigment throughout that goes all the way to her belly, with extremely subdued yellows, and spooky black eyes to match.

Although her belly appears "co-domish," if it is genetic, it would have to be simple recessive, making all hets sired by this pied male 50% het "Spooky Ball," and her siblings 66% het "Spooky?"

If it is genetic it should make a SMOKIN' lav someday!

We get them as c.h specials every year, they are called dark morphs.
They get darker and darker as they grow.

A friend of ours has a dark morph het pied female we sold him a few years ago that should hopefully go this year from his male pied, maybe a "poor mans" black and white pied??

A very interesting animal, some lines are genetic some are not , looks like you have a very interesting project on your hands. Good luck!

do you know the origin of the pied male that sired the "dark morph" het pied female you spoke of?

the pied male that sired this female came from BHB....maybe brian is a DARK LORD from the order of the SITH who sires his own pieds himself! lol

It's been theorized by some that dehydrated eggs tend to turn out randomly hyper-melanistic babies. Not sure if thats a possibility in your case but just throwing that out there if you hadn't heard it.
