Starter Snake

chosen2030 Sep 30, 2008 01:49 PM

I have a 6 year old that would like his first snake. What is a good starter one for handling? I would prefer a snake that I can feed something other than rodents to. Any suggestions? Preferrably one that also remains relatively small (around 3 ft.). Thanks for the input.

Hey there!
You should get plenty of good responses from the general snakes forum, found here: Snakes - General Forum

Right off the top of my head I say to look into a kingsnake or milksnake, but there are other good candidates.

One thing to consider about what a snake eats is the availability of that food source and the ease of keeping a supply on-hand.

Rodents are abundant, both live & frozen (probably more abundant frozen), and the frozen ones require no maintenance other than keeping them frozen. Insects, amphibians, etc, are harder to come by and require care & feeding until they're fed off to the snake. My personal opinion is that F/T rodents is the best, only, way to go.

Post this inquiry in the Snakes - General Forum. You'll get more, faster, replies.

Best wishes!
