Wild baby Easterns

RobHaneisen Sep 30, 2008 03:12 PM

For three falls in a row, I keep finding these guys roaming in my basement. They are hatchling eastern milks. In the picture one is still in shed. So far this year I have found three in my basement. I've seen the adults outside my house several times in the past five years. My wife saw one that she said was close to four feet (she thought it was one fo my Hondurans at first). The ones I've seen have been closer to 3 feet long. Anyway, I suspect they are laying eggs in a crack between my foundation and the front steps and when we get a big rain in the fall I think the hatchlings end up crawling into the basement through some crack or down the dryer vent. I have never seen an adult wild snake in the house. I have a ton of garter snakes living in the foundation in my garage and I've seen the occassional baby from them in the basemrnt as well.

Cute baby easterns. I usually catch them long enough for a quick photo and then release them in the woods in the back of my house. I've probably caught 8 to 10 of tem in the past three or four years. I know some people might be tempted to keep them, but my feeling is if it is wild it should stay wild.

Seems everyone is lucky in this situation .. you find milksnakes in your own house and the milksnakes get shelter and a free ride into the woods. Very cool!

Very cool that you've got Easterns around your house etc.
I'm guessing that you must be in PA or NY?

Thanks.
I'm actually in central Massachusetts. We see them alot around here.

Wow, that's cool, Rob. I have spent many hours in my youth looking for eastern milks in Western NY with little success and you have them coming into your house! How cool is that. That's pretty valuable property in my opinion!

Some guys have all the luck.I have to drive for a hour to find milk snakes and you just have to walk down to the basement.Next time I head north to watch a red sox game I'm stopping by your place and help you clean out those darn pests.

How lucky can one guy get, Rob?
You know the old saying,"I'd rather be lucky then good."

Very cool, I remember you posting this in the past. Neat story.

On another note: How did your gaigeae production turn out for you this year?
