Unusual Mangrove Snake

vegasbilly Oct 01, 2008 05:22 PM

Got this beastie in today..5yr captive virgin female! Fully 5.5' long w/outstanding girth. As the photos depict, her tenure in captivity has done nothing to calm her down. First black/white one I've seen..any similar males out there for a tryst? LOL. Cool contrast w/my black/yellow animals though she'll be in quarantine for quite a while.

Yes, I've seen B&W dendrophila....not that unusual....in some localities they are black & white rather than black and yellow...

Very nice looking specimen, Bill!
It's most definitely Boiga dendrophila dendrophila, which is the same subspecies I have - slightly less common than Boiga dendrophila melanota. I believe this subspecies is found in in Java, whereas melanota are often imported from Malaysia.
I have seen several white and black animals in the classifieds, but never in person.

Thanks Roy! For me personally this is the 1st one like this I've seen. Regardless of her color, her size/health is soo impressive. We'll need to compare notes sometimes as I see you're into Spilotes as well. I have 3.3 adults now w/1.1 being F1s produced by me. All are finally of breeding age/size so it should be an interesting Winter. Both these species sure add to the feed bill don't they?

Haha. Yes, they definitely do add to the bill, but they're worth it!

I would like to compare notes. Are your Spilotes Central or South American? I've just acquired mine, and they look like Central American specimens to me. I love them already!

The F1s are Central American and the other 2.2 are South American. Coloration is all over the spectrum...oddly I have one that is almost solid black w/just a yellow mask..its just as pretty in its own way as the high yellow ones are.
