Respiratory Infection

cardiacsmd Oct 01, 2008 09:07 PM

Hey guys. So my two snakes finished their shots three weeks ago and one that had the mild case is completely cured. The other one that was a little more serious is still sick. I used Amikacin and he still has saliva in his mouth but the wheezing went away! I don't know what to do because he is starting to lose weight because he had diarrhea. He is still eating once a week and now his diarrhea is gone but even after treatment, his respiratory infection is still here. He has improved a little considering the wheezing is gone but I don't know what else to do. The overall temp in the tank is 85 and the hot spot is 110. Any suggestions?

If the medication doesn't have an effect after a week, then you need to switch antibiotics. Using an ineffective antibiotic for 3 or more weeks is just helping the bacteria get even more resistant.

Use something different such as Fortaz(ceftazidime) or Baytril. Amikacin is really hard on their kidneys and you need to either give subQ fluids or soak them regularly to keep them hydrated(and keep the kidneys functioning).

I would think 110 degrees is too hot....do you see the snake actually occupying that spot?

Perhaps 94-96 degrees would be better.... Just my opinion.

Actually he is always on that spot. Since its the fall and it is getting colder, the vet told me to raise the heat significantly. He needs to have a dramatic increase because any drop in temperature, his respiratory infection may get worse.
