Squirrelly burm

ilovethesqueeze Oct 01, 2008 09:50 PM

I have a year and a half old burm who has somewhat recently been acting a lot more jazzed up than she did when she was smaller. She is approximately 5 feet long and is eating 2 med rats (thawed) every two weeks. I have had snakes before that were a little more difficult to handle when they were hungry but she acts like she's hunting me even the day after she's been fed, it's very consistent. When someone walks by her cage she races out of her hide to investigate. She has not been striking and usually doesn't even "s" up like she is about to strike. It's just this super interest in anything that moves. Am I not feeding her enough?! She is ok to handle once I get her out, but I'm very careful in how I approach her in her cage. Also, she is an absolute nightmare if I take her outside! What is the deal with that!?

Thanks ya'll

If it were me, I would first increase the food. That sounds like an awful light diet for that size snake.

You also might try asking on the Burmese forum, although most people who post here have a good general knowledge of pythons.

More food. Burms are feeding machines at that age/size. Feed weekly. She is just hungry.

And don't do what I did with mine - feed her in a seperate enclosure!!! Dumbest thing I ever did with my albino male!!! Every time I open his doors it's like ringing the dinner bell!!!

Might I suggest this thread as additional reading on the subject: http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=1606578,1606578

It's not fun to remove a snake from its enclosure, trigger its feeding response, and then have to place it back in its enclosure. Increasing the amount of contact between you and the snake during feeding does not in any way reduce the liklihood of the snake mistaking you for food. In fact, it does the opposite. Any snakes "in cage" feeding response can easily be neutralized by simply tapping it with a snake hook to make it aware of your presence.
