Alvord Desert Herpers?

Ameron Oct 02, 2008 12:44 AM

Anyone have Gopher Snake specimens from the Alvord Desert or eastern Oregon?

I have a 42-inch male from the Fields area that is quite light in color, no black on neck. Head is light brown with blotches, no line across head. He's much lighter in the front one-third than most Deserticolas.

If you have an Oregon gopher snake, I'd like to talk to you. Please contact me.

I have caught tons of Basin gopher snakes from the Alvord area as well Malheur area and the Owyhee drainage (ie south eastern OR). I have found the deserticola in the southeast areas to have very clean patterns and a good solid stripe from the head further down than most I've seen while having a lighter mid-body color.

That being said I have also seen very light individuals from those areas. Almost look like a faded affinis. I believe Jason Nelson had some basins from Utah that looked very similar.

Most of these were caught in my younger years and I do have several photos but they're on film.

Sorry, but I'm new to posting photos for this site. I don't yet have a Flickr or similar site to post.

Later I plan to post photos.
