Liquid Baytril online?

BryanD Oct 02, 2008 11:22 AM

anyone know where I can get baytril? I have a GTP that needs it (and flame me if you want to), but I'm smart enough to calculate the grams per KG so why pay a vet hundreds of dollar when I know this will be the treatment anyway.

you can call it a flame if you want to, but baytril is an Rx and it is for many reasons, not just so the vet can make $, and i dont know any vets whos office visit is "hundreds of dollars", in my area they are $40-$50, and there may be a cheaper ab for whats going on (baytril is one of the most costly i can think of), so id just pay the office visit and get the right meds, if your going to a qualified vet they shouldent just throw baytril @ you for fix all
just my 2 cents...

There could very easily be a more effective antibiotic available than enrofloxacin depending on the specific type of infection and causative pathogen. I personally feel that enrofloxacin is somewhat over-prescribed considering that there are other superior antibiotics available that could be used in many of these cases.

Smart enough to use a calculator.... wow that's a sure replacement for a vet indeed. Lucky python

Was that a flame? I don't care.

I have a cold. If I go to the human doctor are they going to identify the pathogens in my airways or simply prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic? Get real and get off the pulpits. If the snake doesn't improve with baytril in the proper dosage I'd spend the money for a vet but most vets in my area are clueless. The last time I went they tried to convince me to put my carpet python down because it's tongue was blue. Either you have the answer to the question or you don't. Otherwise shut up.

No, they probably wouldn't give you any antibiotics. It seems there is a rather large problem with resistent bacteria nowadays.

" but most vets in my area are clueless"

Everyone's excuse nowadays... Maybe you could lend them your calculator?

"Either you have the answer to the question or you don't"

Sure. I can get it at www.wddc.com. Might work for you but I doubt it. Perhaps go to Mexico. You can get a lot of crap down there. Let border patrol know that you have it and see what they say; I'd be curious.

I think the question was answered when you were told it was a prescription drug for a reason. Can't kill me for rubb'n it in, you did invite it did you not?

While I agree with Ian that it is always best to see a vet for serious reptile health issues, I do not completely rule out the antibiotic treatment of reptiles by non-professional keepers. However - and I stress this highly - this should only be attempted by keepers that are familiar with the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobial treatment in reptiles. You should also own, and know how to use, a PDR (Physicians' Desk Reference). If not familiar with these concepts, at least consult a vet before attempting any antibiotic regimen. And be aware that improper dosing, and adverse reactions with antibiotic use, can kill an animal as efficiently as a bacterial infection.
