Any advice on scooping up crickets?

jelly_beanie75 Sep 06, 2003 04:52 PM

Whats the best way to catch crickets in a 10 or 20 gallon tank? I'm having a tough time catching them without having a bunch escape. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Depends, what other items are in the tank other than the crickets?

There are some egg crates, paper towel rolls, a couple of dishes with gutload. Maybe too much?

Well, depends on how many crickets. You should supply your crickets with hiding spots but not too much because it isn't needed and it only brings trouble when you try to catch them. Put in those items as you see fit, the more crickets, the more spots you have to create. Its common sense so you'll know. Just don't let them bunch up together too tightly. What you do is, wait till they hang around them. Just pick it up quickly and thrust them into a bag, they'll fall off and you got your crickets. Any crickets running around I guess you gotta catch by hands or if you want, take most of the items out but one and let them go to that. When they do, do it again. I hope I'm making sense lol. What your trying to do is get them to cling to the items so you can dump them in groups instead of catching them individually. Pet shop people do that. Any other questions ask on.

I put my vitamin powder in a small baggie and then when ready to get the crix I pick up the paper towel roll and stick the end into the baggie and give it a tap and the crix fall into the baggie. Then I close the baggie and give it a shake and tehy are ready for my herps.

What we do is have the eggcrate or towel tubes so that you can bang them into your hand or into a gallon ziplock bag...that way you can keep your hands down in the bin and brush off the climbers before they leap free.
Maybe you need a deeper bin?
