EXTREMELY LATE CLUTCH (pics inside)

happysurgeman Oct 02, 2008 11:55 PM

FIRST CLUTCH EVER! would you guys let me know if im missing something?? im soo nervous and want some peace of mind.

laid yesterday, Oct 1st. i placed them in a Hovabator, inside a 6qt sterilite tub with HatchRite as bedding.(didnt add any water) melted a small hole on the lid, just big enough to fit The Helix probe. Set the Helix at 89F.

only concerns is the helix probe was actually resting on top of one the eggs and caused a indentation on it. i candled the egss and all 6 have vessels. today i saw a grayish stain on two of the eggs.

will they be ok?

Looks good! Congratulations!

Just keep an eye on them, and don't worry too much. Look once a day, and note the changes. If they start to get really discolored or smelly, there may be problems.

But don't worry!!

Good luck

thanks alot.=)

im moving out of my house in 2 days ( horrible timing eh?) im going to leave the hovabator behind, because i think its just too risky and have no idea how to safely transport eggs. i will be living 30 mins away. so it would be ALOT of gas to check on em daily. how far can in between can i safely check on em? 1 week? 2, 3 days?

I moved and drove some eggs about 20 minutes away. Just have someone hold them carefully and level while you drive them. Move them in the hovabator and the temp will not drop that much due to the foam insulation, unless you live somewhere real cold.
Just my experience with moving while incubating, not a problem.

BIG congrats! I'll ask what everyone else is thinking: Who is the father?

Next, don't worry about the probe making a dent in the egg. If you are threading it through a hole in the tub, simply tape it in place. My only concern with the probe directly above the eggs is that when condensation collects on the probe it could:
a) short out the probe
and/or
b) the condensation could drip onto the eggs

I generally don't drill a hole for my probes. Simply set the probe on the floor of the tub next to the eggs and close the lid. The lids don't close tight enough to damage the probe and a piece of tape will keep it out of the way.

Also, don't worry too much about slight discoloration. Sometimes the eggs do discolor slightly in the beginning. Gray spots are usually thinner areas in the egg shell (as long as they are not spreading, slimey or fuzzy). If you are worried about mold you can always pick up some athlete's foot powder and sprinkle it (lightly) on the moldy areas.

The hardest rule you will have to follow... leave them alone! Check the thermostat daily and open the egg box/incubator no more than once (maybe twice} a week for a moment or two and to allow fresh air in and take a quick peek on their progress.

She really turned into a beauty!

Good luck and try not to worry . . . . if everything is set up right, and it sounds like it is, what will be will be. I'll keep my fingers crossed for some hot looking yellow and white heads to be pipping in about 60 days.
