experienced leo keepers

spec Sep 06, 2003 05:20 PM

I bought a pair of leos at a show last weekend. I was told that leos were easier to keep and had as much personality as a beardie. As a beardie owner I am a little disappointed.

Now, does it normally take leos this long to get on a regular feeding schedule. Currently I have a male and female, spproximately 3 to 3 1/2 months old housed in a sterlite container with one moist hide and 3 other hides throughout the enclosure. I've been putting in a few crickets every night and leaving a calcium dish, water, and mealworms in the enclosure.
The male seems to be more active than the female. I rarely see her out of the hide.
In your experience, has housing 2 leos together at this age been a problem? Should I seperate them as soon as I can? I'm knew to this and am trying to make them as confortable as I can.

thanx,

spec

yes, you definatly should house them seperately if possible, unless they are both females, sorry, i forgot what sexes they were already. leos can take awhile to get adjusted and start eating definatly. you seem like your doing pretty good, i don't think that there should be any real problems. leo's do not have the spunk of bearded dragons, thats for sure, but leo's, atleast in my experience, are more of individuals and each has its own very unique personality.

type of uth to use? I bought a thermotronics one at the show I went to but by the time I order the same one and have it shipped it will end up costing me almost $30. I only paid $15 at the show. What brand/size? And currently I'm using a rheostat to control my temps...Is a thermostat better/worse? How about heat tape?

you can probably pick up a UTH at a petco, or any petstore that has reptiles. i would just get a small one, enough that the leo can get heat from it, and that the humid hide can go over it. i don't think any particular brand is better then any, and i think a rheostat and a thermostat will bring you the same results. heat tape would really only be better if you had lots of leos.

I just learned a lot about heat tape from Marcia at Golden Gate Geckos yesterday when I went to pick up my new baby. And as soon as I need to set up housing for offspring next season I'm switching to heat tape. It's SOOO much cheaper, and works great. I'm also ditching the probes, and just getting Rheostats and a temp gun.

Im using a rheostat and a digital thermometer with probe right now. I also check the temps with an infrared temp gun. Never can be too careful.
