How to treat MBD?

bruce_y Oct 03, 2008 12:43 PM

I went to meet with my son's preschool teacher and noticed that the class beardie has a serious case of MBD. He's very trembly, has difficulty walking and generally in horrible shape. I noticed a flourescent light but am not sure if it's a Reptisun or not. Even if it is a Reptisun, I'd bet my last nickel that it hasn't been changed for years.

What can I do to help this poor creature? I'll donate for the vet bill and buy a new UV bulb and supplements, but what else can be done??

Thanks in advance for your advice.

There's not enough information for me to help much. But, the best thing would be to bring him to a reptile vet to access his current condition. Liquid Calcium is a big help and can turn things around rapidly. But, there is risks depending on his condition. Then, proper husbandry will help a lot. Certainly change the UVB bulb with the correct one for the setup and get them supplementing his food. I don't really like pets in schools, that often suffer without food and heat on the weekends.

Thanks for your note. I don't actually know the particulars since I didn't have my temp gun with me, nor did I have the chance to look for timers and such. I will do so this week and provide more details.

Thanks again...stay tuned for more info...
