I still don't know what to use as a substrate. Looks are a must in my case so newspaper or paper towels are not going to work. Is there any kind of loose sub that is very good? I would like to use sand if I can. Thanks.

IMO the best substrate u can buy is slate tiles from a home improvement store like home depot.....they look natural and really accent a tank and they are just as safe if not safer than paper towels.....Sand is very debated, many people use it with no problems and there are a few that use it and have problems...usually if you provide a calcium/vitamin powder dish they do fine on sand...just my 2 cents either substrate will wourk but slate is the safest and with sand there is a small risk and if your willing to take it...go ahead

I know that not many people use them, but they work and look great. They are cheap (I buy mine in bulk at Lemos) so I can replace them regularly. I also have not had any problems with my leos ingesting them and even if they did they are completely digestible.

i use a combination of slate and rerptile carpet, now only is it safe it looks good. i also put paper towels in their potty area for easy clean up. i used sand once before and its posses unnessiary risk to the animals, ifthey eat too much sand they poop sand logs and could get impacted, which sucks as many of us know.
just a thought
