When dilling holes in tubs....

Bogey22 Oct 04, 2008 09:27 PM

how big should they be? I am building my first rack system and need to know how big the holes in my adult sized tubs (used for rat snakes) should be. I've heard that if they are to big the snakes will rub their noses raw trying to get out.

Thanks

IMO melting witha soldering iron is better. Leaves round edges, not sharp ones. Also, no cracking.

For size, I keep em soldering iron size and make more if I need more ventilation.

Don't drill, melt. Use a soldering iron and melt the holes into the plastic, leaves no sharp edges. Try not to breath the fumes unless you want to lol.

I prefer drilling holes with a stepped drill bit, starting at about 1/8" and working up to about 3/16". The bit I use is titanium coated and hasn't cracked a single Sterilite tub even cold tubs.

I drill all my holes the same size and over ventilate and cover up un-needed holes, easier to cover up than drill more.

Cheers

I used to burn the holes in using a soldering iron with a box fan above my head in a cellar window. You had to in the days of the brittle hard plastic tubs. But with the softer plastic boxes like Sterlite I find using the Unibit a lot faster and it makes a clean neat hole. Very proffessional looking and you can go for several size holes with the same tool. It's made specifically for plastic and wood to give a crisp clean hole and you can get them at any lowes, home depot etc.

The Unibit is a stepped drill bit.

I Didn't know that. Thought Unibit was what it was called, not a brand. How do you go about covering up the unused holes? I was concerned about using packing tape becuse I pictured a shedding snake pushing agoinst it and getting stuck to it, tongue and all.

Unibit is manufactured by Irwin, I typically avoid product placement.

I use electrical tape on the outside of the tub...

Thanks Jeremy. checked out those 9" version ARS tubs you were nice enough to post about while I was at Daytona and they did slide nicely.

I read that on your other post...probably should have replied, rather than making a mental note.

Was Brian there?
