I read somewhere on the forum that females will lay eggs regardless of whether she's mated or not. How old/big do females start to do that? Is it true that egg-bound females will eventually die?

My turtles are still little (2 inches) and I don't know their sexes yet. But I'd like to find out more info in advance.
