My Thamnophis Collection- PICTURE HEAVY

asnakelovinbabe Oct 05, 2008 10:14 AM

Thought that it was high-time that I got my butt in here and showed the kingsnake forums my garters! I am already constantly on thamnophis.. but I may as well be here too!

these are going to be in no real order.. just as I pull them off photobucket. Any snakes you see pictured, are my own. This is not every garter in my collection.. just a good idea.

First up- my WC hypo (still unproven but pretty much obvious) female. I have had her for 1 year and 2 months as of now. she has grown quite a bit since finding her.

This little fella was born here this year, I kept him.. could not resist that adorable soft spotted pattern!

just a cute baby sirtalis

My obviously, not so blue FL blue sirtalis female

After buying her for $35 at a show... I took her home and an hour later.. I got this!

little mutt ribbon snake given to me at a show... proximus x sauritus

Female radix

Female parietalis

Marigold, Female sirtalis I found this summer... she is NEAT!

female pickeringii

this is "Mower" she obviously hit by a lawnmower and has major scarring on her back. After healing up in my care, I released her a month ago, but a few days ago, she was found by my brother AGAIN... in my backyard! (half a mile from where I released her, no lies) Her shiny brilliant eyes and love of pinkies wins.. she is staying now.

Young female flame I caught this year... same farm as the female with orange cheeks! I could not beleive I caught a flame!!

This female is amazing. She threw a small litter, half of which came out with bright red eyes and red labial markings and half of which came out normal. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, all the red-lipped babies withered away down to nothing, thought they ate every other day.. and all passed. I will try again next year. I did not hold onto the normals, so I do not know if they expierienced the same fate.

Awwwwwwwwe!

My male Fl blue sirtalis

Sirtalis neonate perched on a clematus

Anery male radix's het nebraska and Iowa albino's - have grown a good bit since this photo

I am going to BITE YOU

male Concinnus

Similis from Felzer

They are both really MEAN... they BITE and it is adorable.

Iowa Snow Radix

Nebraska albino radix... my favorite of the radix's

The female Fitchii and a concinnus

I have 1.2 of these.. these are Concinnus... without the red spots! I snatched these at daytona from a guy who had a whole bunch of average concinnus, and these 3 were different. I like to call them Oregon Unred Spotless's :D. I personally think they are highly attractive.

1.1 felzer flames!!!!

Some snakes I wish I could show you but don't have pics of yet are:

1.1 eastern blacknecks
1.1 Hypermelanistic wanderings from Don Belnap
1.1 parietalis het anery (getting them from wayne, not here yet)
0.0.5 baby butleri (not here yet)
1.1 "monstrous" radix (not here yet)

Okay now here are some other things:
0.0.1 amel Storeria Dekayi Victa... from what Scott told me this snake was found a couple weeks prior to daytona, he showed it to me and thought it was a teensy weensy garter snake baby... and when I looked at it I knew instantly it was not! haha! I could see how he may have mistaken it for one though.. such a tiny snake in amel, if you don't have perfect vision... it would be hard! I have searched everywhere and to my knowledge.. this is the only one being worked with. if anyone has information regarding other amel dekay's... let me know. This little gem leaps into the air to suck worm peices off mt tongs. It has grown SO much since Daytona.

1.4 Red bellied snakes.. I have these because I am trying to learn how their color patterns are passed on... and whether or not it is even mildly predictable. The silver on the left is the male... he will be bred to all four females to see how the offspring of each female differs.

Now for some shots of my snakeroom:

I hope you all enjoyed!

Very nice colection and very nice pictures.

How do you care for the red bellied snakes? I would like to have a few but never followed thru. Let us now how the babies turn out.

Thanks, I enjoyed the pictures

Care for red bellied snakes and all storeria is very similar to thamnophis, only in miniature. These guys prefer lots of low to the ground, tight, dark places to hide. I provide a nice low to the ground shallow water dish as well, and their diet is more specialized, they prefer slugs, but will eat earthworms and salamanders also. I usually start with slugs and wean them onto eartworms. I use supplements with their worms occasionally. They are really quite fun to have, and mine all are at the point now where they look up at my hands for their meals!

They are very shy and secretive snakes... but they open up if you give them time!

Thank you.
I remember finding them when I was a kid growing up in Pa.
Worms are fairly easy to get but where & how do you get slugs?
I'd love to get a pair of two (snakes, not slugs)- they have always fasinated me.
There are tons of DeKay snakes around but I haven't seen a red belly in 15 years.

Thanks for the info

Steve

That's a really impressive collection you have there! It's cool to me to see people have the compassion to deal with the smaller species in our hobby community! My hat goes off to you and Dekay brown for your interest in the "little" guys! Just my opinion!! Take care!, Jeff

asnakelovinbabe Oct 05, 2008 10:08 PM

thanks!

I am actually downsizing all my not-garter and not-little-snakes to make room for MORE little snakes :D namely.. MORE garters, but others as well.

I am building the Itty Bitty Snake Commitee!

I also want to start working with african house snakes, keelbacks (I have one female indonesian "garter"... once you get one thats not parasite ridden they are fantastic), european grass snakes, water snakes of all flavors and other less common snakes and make them standardly available CB and healthy and well loved... I know lots of people have house snakes, but who actually takes the time to devote their entire collection to a broad range of little snakes! Most people just have a pair of garters or a pair of house snakes on the side.. because they breed easy they see them as quick extra cash.

And honestly... if fed right... many of the "little" snakes can actually get pretty big! I am recieving a nice pair of normal radix on tuesday and supposedly.. the female is 40 inches... I am excited! Apparently, she does not love food like she should.. so its my job to fix that!

Shannon,
Very nice collection!
I personally need to get my but over to thamnophis.com more often, so many to do's, so little time in the day.
I especially like Marigold and the fitchii, you don't see snakes like those everyday, and that amel dekay is amazing!!!
Of course I also really, really love that snow radix you have, do take care of that one, it's very special.
Thanks for sharing all those wonderful pics.

at least i think that is what scott told me :D

Shannon, I would love to see what the results would be if you crossed that hypo female with your Felzer flame male, had you considered that cross? Good luck with her.

What deos that interesting little snow you had this year look like now?

Dan

boxienuts Oct 07, 2008 12:43 AM

She looks like a normal snow for the most part and has become more the typical pinkish-white,but she does have a yellowish tint that is noticeable on the inside curves of her body when the skin pinches togather, interestingly her sheds are and always have been yellow, not clear like the other snows. I will try to post a pic of her tomorow.
She is getting huge just like her mother Ruby, she weighs over 200grams she pounds 2-3 smalls twice a week so I am going to bump her up to medium mice soon,so she is well on track to hopefully having a litter this spring. Her mother Ruby is holding steady at a whopping 500grams, eating 1 jumbo mouse per week, she could, would, and has easily ate 3 or 4, but i have her on a steady diet of 1 mouse per week to keep her from getting obese. The snows are the most docile, even dispositioned garters, yet they have ferocious appetites. If I could keep only one snake it would be Ruby

LOL!!!!

I have actually, just ask scott he will tell you ALLLL about my dream of producing hypo flames. We are probably doing a breeding loan this year, and I was originally going to choose to have her paired with a flame.. but realized that it's best to get some pure hypo's just like her, without the flame color influence, and THEN proceed to make some hypo flames. trust me when I say the day that I see a hypo flame pop out I will jump through the roof.
