Looks like a northern water snake (Neroidia sipedons sipedons). It could be an eastern milk snake (Lampropeltis t. triangulum), however. Were the scales smooth or keeled? If they were keeled, it is definitely a water snake.

You're absolutely right. I released him that day (he was in the pool skimmer). He was still in the same spot overnight....but when I came home from work he was gone. I think perhaps it warmed up and he moved out. Hopefully he made it.
