Thinking of getting a Corn Snake

Wavlyn Sep 06, 2003 07:57 PM

I'm wondering if anyone can give me websites or info on corn snakes. I'm seriously considering getting one, but I want to know how much a setup can cost, and what things are pretty much necessary and which are optional. I've spotted a 90-gallon tank that I would be able to get pretty cheap, but is that the right size? The snake I was looking at wasn't yet fully grown, about 2 feet, maybe less. Also, what's your opinion on their temperment, habits, etc? Are they good snakes for a first-timer? About how much is the food, and do they have to eat mice? (I'm not squeamish about them, but my mother doesn't want mice in her freezer...)

Anyhoo, if you can answer any of these questions, or just have tips on keeping them or anything, please respond.

90 gallon is way too big. a 2 foot corn would be fine in a 20 gallon for the rest of its life. i's advise under-tank heat mats(to one side), keep the tank at around 80 degrees. it will also need 2 hide boxes(one on each side) so that it can thermogate. it will need a water dish that it can cool off in if necissary. a variety of substrates can be used. buy and read either The Corn Snake Manual, by bill and kathy love, or The Guide to Owning a Corn Snake, by jerry g. walls. make sure to have everything set up and the temperature right before buying the snake.

A 90 gallon is very large. I don't like giant tanks that much because they get so -heavy- and are a pain to clean. A 20 long is all that is required for all but the largest corns, but an adult will probably appreciate a larger tank if you want to supply one.
