Well, my herping season is about over wich really sucks. All next week is going to be in the 40' for daytime highs & 20's for night time lows so I dont know if today was my last day out this year or not. Hopefully I'll have at least one more new post for you guys after this, we'll see.

I am going to miss your posts. Everytime I log on, I look for them. This spring I'm going to have to get out to some of my old hot spots in SW La., if they're still there. Probably won't be able to do as well as you though. Never thought of Mt. as a good herping state, you changed that. Looking forward to next year.

Nice shots Dan! Like Matt, I had never really considered Montana to be a very "herp intensive" state....But your posts do a great job of illustrating the varied wildlife up there...thanks so much for enlightening the rest of us regarding the wonderful animals from "up north"!

Thanks Kris,
Montana is no Arizona, but I have fun. I'm glad you & the others have enjoyed my photos because I take a ton & enjoy showing them off.

Thanks,
Dan

That was great. I've never seen a melanistic garter from your area; are they common? Is there a population somewhere? Very cool...

They are some what common in a few areas here. I found 5 this year, some years I have found as many as 12 & some years as little as 2. I know of 2 localities of them here in Cascade Co., & have heard of populations of melanistic wanderings in Craig, MT., & Townsen, MT. I'll be looking for those locals next season.

A pleasure as always! Sadly, the season is winding down now for most of us..

Yeah, went out on the trail after two week absence ( due to crappy early autumn virus!) & got TOTALLY skunked. Just too cool. Not even a skink..

dan,
what part of Montana are you in?with the cool temps the elk hunting should be getting good.dont know if you hunt but I bet you see some awesome mule deer and elk.

nice photos, you always amaze me with the great habitat shots also.
keep up the good work, hopefully you get a few more days of herpable weather up there.otherwise you might have to travel to some foreign destinations

daneby Oct 21, 2008 08:41 PM

I'm in Cascade County, right in the middle of the state. I'm not a hunter (elk meat is awesome though), but I do see alot of deer & elk, & every now & then I see a moose.

I think the herpable weather is over here for the season. It sucks, but I have alot at home to keep me busy through the winter.

Thanks for the compliments!

Dan
