Frozen toads--for Easterns.

smilin-buddha Sep 06, 2003 08:47 PM

I was wondering if anyone has had luck with frozen toads. I tried to scent some pinkies, but they still prefer the toads. I was wondering if anyone has had luck feeding frozen toads to Easterns. Thanks.

I would guess that you are probably giving up too easily. It may take a lot of work to get an Eastern eating a scented mouse, but it CAN happen. Continue to be persistent and use everything you know about animal behavior. What methods have you tried? The best method is to get a captive toad to bite onto a mouse, for some reason, the saliva from the toad gets them hungry.

By the way, freezing is not a humane way of killing a reptile or amphibian.

If you already have frozen toads I would suggest using one for gut scenting and the others for frog slurry. Try defrosting the toad and slitting open the belly. Rub the pinkie in the guts and body fluids after washing the pinkie under water to remove all smell. If that does not work, make the slurry. You can use a blender or just mash it yourself. It is VERY gross, but it can have good results (doesn't mean always, as hogs do not always take to scenting anyway, especially the older ones). Andy

In answer to your question, yes Easterns will eat frozen toads and frozen toad parts.
