african field guides

scatmelee Oct 08, 2008 02:48 PM

i'm looking for recomendations for a good african field guide. i want a book with good photographs AND information. i love the audubon society field guides and am looking for something similar in quality to those. i don't mind if it is only snakes, but a reptile and amphibian guide would be nice. ANY advice will be appreciated!

There are no good "African" field guides because Africa is a big diverse continent.

There are lots of good books on South African Herps (and the rest of southern Africa), there is a good field guide to Eastern Africa by Spawls et al. and some guides to Western Africa. However, most western African guides are written in French (as you would expect). Most of these regional guides cover snakes. Only a few cover other herps.

The newer paperback by Spawls et al looks interesting.

Just search amazon for books with the keywords Africa, Reptile, and amphibian.

I have a decent book called "snakes other reptiles and amphibians of east Africa", by Bill Branch. The reason I bought it is because I went to Kenya last summer and I caught the snake that's pictured on the cover(Philothamnus hoplogaster). I think it's like 15 bucs on Amazon.
