Gathering Ants

lbwell Sep 06, 2003 09:10 PM

For the past several years I tried all kinds of methods to gather harvester ants. As a kid, we use to bury a soup can, mouth up and cleaned, near the bed. The ants would fall in and could not climb out. Now days that's too much work.
Recently I finally came up with a painless method to gathering many ants easily. I use a "dust buster" handheld portable vacume that can be purchased at WalMart. It works great. Just vacume them up, dump them in your ant container and take a few out as you need them. I do put them in the fridge first to slow them down. Apparently the HLs could care less on how you catch them.
Any other ideas on gathering, keeping or handling ants would be appreciated.

Gathering ants with a dustbuster? Something I would've never thought of. Two conerns cros my mind when thinking of that idea. If I used a "dustbuster", I would be collecting a lot of sand with my ants. Plus, what if you miss a couple when dumping. Ants being as smart as they are, they would surely find a way out.

But if it works for you, that is completely awesome that you thought that up and posted it!!!
