Het clown characteristics

Gimptafied Oct 08, 2008 09:40 PM

I'm kind of blind to some of the subtleties of certain morphs, especially when looking at photos on the internet. I've heard that het clowns tend to have certain characteristics that stand out compared to normal non-hets. Since I have never even seen a clown or a snake het for it in person, I figured I'd ask you guys. What might a typical het clown look like? I'm interested because I got this cute little 50% possible het clown male and am wondering if I should invest in a female for him. He's got an awesome pattern so even if he turns out not to be a het he's still a keeper.

I'm no expert by any means, but from what I've heard, lighter color and white outlines on black can be "common" in clown hets. There are always exceptions though, I have a 1.1 of 100% clown hets and the female is lighter colored with more white, however the male looks like a completely normal ball, darker and hardley any white creeping up, so IMO I wouldn't necessarily trust those "markers".

I realize there is no definite 100% way to tell whether he's het or not. I guess what I'm really looking for is some hope or encouragement and an excuse to buy another snake.

Interesting topic.

Seems like a lot of hets have a more distinct pattern, many with white along the sides. Many also have a lighter colored head. I don't know if these are definitive characteristics of het Clowns, however. I produced a number of possible het Clowns that had these characteristics as well. Some do not.

This is a possible het Clown I produced this year. It's one of the prettiest normal ball pythons I produced. It's a male. Is it worth proving out?

I think he's worth working with, Casey . . .

Even if he doesn't prove out het clown, he's still got that something special selective breeders slaver over!
