blue beauty death ????

sblossomc Oct 09, 2008 01:39 PM

I just recived my first pair of hatchling blues. I have had them for a week, when last night i found the female dead. I have them in a rack in sterilight tubs 16qt.I used papper towles ss water dish, inverted flower pot hide, and a small plastic plant stim.
I had tried to feed the the night befor in 1# deli cups. I started with f/t pinkies then tried live. I had no luck getting them to feed and 24 hrs later the female was dead. upon reciving them they were allert and appered to be in fine health. I was just wondering if I'm doing something wrong or is this just one of those things that happen from time to time. they were sold as c/b oh and my rack temp is 86f. thanks for any help.

i have a pair of hatchling cave dwellers that i believe are closely related to the beauties. they are my first rats,if you don't count ones i caught and kept as a kid a couple decades ago :0) so i don't have a whole lot of experience with rats. but i'll share my 2 cents.

everything i have read goes along with the prior posting that they prefer lower temps. i have mine in a room that is in the low 70's with a uth in the mid 80's on one end. that way they have a wide range of temps to self regulate. i've only had them a month and a half and they have doubled in size aleady. that said they seem to just about always stay on the low side but i like for them to have the choice.

sorry to hear about the loss. that is always a serious bummer. i hope that you get you setup dialed in and keep with it. don't give up. raising and keeping snakes is an awsome thing. take care....

thanks everyone i've got my temps down and have provided a slow range from 70 - 80 he is looking mutch beter and has been seen drinking and moving about just about lights out. still not feeding though will mist and try a frisky live pinkie today.

RandyWhittington Oct 09, 2008 09:36 PM

I agree with the others. I would definaly lower the temps. A range of low to mid 70's to a warm side in the low to mid 80's. I would also make sure to keep up the humidity in their enclosure. All the beauty species can dry out easy especially when young. Good luck.

I live in a verry dry climate. I was wondering if a deli cup filled with s-moss and a hole in the lid would help, but realy what is a good range for my humidity. also i'm haveing trouble gettin him to feed. i've tried the standard stuff i.e misting with warm watter, morning, dusk, deli cups over night, snd placing f/t pinkie in hide over night. was sold to me as feeding from a company i have used before and trust so i'm led to think i may be doing something wrong.
