feeder snakes

joecop Oct 09, 2008 03:19 PM

I had read somewhere that ringneck snakes were toxic to use as feeders. Anyone know if that is true or not?

A lot of people have used them and do use them as feeders.
Some will tell you stories of feeding a ringneck to a king, and then the king regurging the ringneck and dying later. Probably something to do with the musk.

Just last year I found a adult kansas king snake that had a palpable snake meal in it.Later that day it vomited up a ringneck that was partially digested.
I have kept ringnecks that layed eggs and those eggs and the babys that hatched out later were eaten eagerly by some kansas milk snake yearlings.
My guess is that baby ringnecks are a large part of a new born milk and king snake diet.

This adult milk has eaten small garter snakes, worm snakes and brown snakes but won't touch a ringneck or pinkies.Im hoping to fix that next spring when her feeding response is stronger and I can get her on pinkies.

Thanks Doug. That "30" snake house I believe is full of ringneck babies. That is why I asked. If so maybe I will send you a few for the lil easterns.

Brown snakes when born look like ringnecks but smaller, they are even more sought after in the wild by snakes.

Joe,

Let us know how you make out. I've heard the same thing about ringnecks, but per my conversations w/Doug I now wonder if kings and milks have a greater tolerance to their toxins.

Thanks Paul, i will let you know what happens. Not sure Doug has told you but I am going over to a house this week that is supposed to have a basement "full" of snakes. We will see.
