Hides for large burms?

knottydread Oct 10, 2008 12:22 PM

Just a quick question for everyone out there, do you have a hide for your adult burms? I know its pretty essential when they are young, but its pretty difficult to find a good solution for a 10 foot snake.

Any input would be appreciated

hehe yea, i had one of the extra large half log hides for mine but he couldnt fit entirely under it(by a long shot) and ended up cracking in to pieces just leaving chunks of wood lol. i would def. go without one or make it yourself.

Hides are basically for security, although they can be used for humidity, too. Especially during shed cycles.

None of my Burmese Pythons have had a hide since they were around 3ft long. My two adults that I've raised from hatchlings had access to one till they were about 4ft long but they both stopped using it by then.

Since Burmese Pythons aren't naturally nervous snakes I feel that it's easier to give them a sense of security in other ways. Cage setup, cage size, cage location, and frequent interaction, to name a few. They seem to adjust fairly easily under the right conditions.

Take care!
HH

I tried to give my 13' burms I had a hide once....I went and got the largest concrete mixing tub I could find. And all I needed up with was burms with "fat man in a little coat syndrome". I agree with HH there are several ways to offer security without a hide. I've seen keepers build their cages with a enclosed area with a hole just big enough for the Burmese to go through. And then just have the cage open from the top. There are several ideas out there just do your homework and use your imagination.

I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin', and hook up with them later.

I made a cave out of retaining wall blocks for mine - his enclosure is 7 x 3 x 3. The good thing is I can take them out piece by piece to clean his cage and they're strong enough when put together that he can't knock them over. They're cheap at Home Depot too. He spends about half his time in the hide.

Try a large rubbermaid tub. Either remove the lid and cut a hole in the side or cut a hole in the lid and use it right side up.

Most burms don't realy need a hide but it can come in handy for providing a humid area to help with sheding in parts of the country that have a lower humidity.
