Whats the story on white-cheek brooksi?

foxturtle Oct 11, 2008 07:20 PM

I picked up a near breeding size female from Mark Bell today at the NARBC. Kind of interesting looking for a "brooksi"... Her sides are patternless, which is what I like to see in a brooks. With a little more growth she may end up looking completely patternless.

Anyone know what the story on these is?

Also at the NARBC, Laura got this king from Mark Bell that was labeled as a brooks/goini cross:

Lastly, I picked up a pair of these. Not technically king snakes, but they are kings. They don't look like much now, but are killer as adults.

Very cool snakes but the King rat takes the cake. I think they look cool as babies and adults. Nice scores.

The king rats. I've been looking at getting into those for a couple years now... its just rare that I see anything other than the occasional single adult being offered.

I will repeat what Tom said. NICE SCORES~!

Ive been keeping my thoughts on these under wraps... but here goes.

I have 1.1 of these "white-face" brooksi... the male was said to be a "hypo white-face" the female just a "White-face"

Neither of these snakes are hypo. (rather any of the known hypo mutations)... what IS interesting about the pair is that they BOTH have ruby eyes... it's harder to see on the female because she's darker but they are ruby. Additionally the sides are patternless/near patternless (as you stated) and they both have a solid white belly. the male is a looker the female looks much like your female.

I don't know anything about the origin of these, but i can't think of anything "foreign" they could have been bred from, ultimately resulting in this "white-face" appearance. Personally i have a strong feeling these will prove to be something (morph) brand new all together.

I probably should have gotten a male as well.

These remind me of what a white side looks like without the white sides. I noticed the color of this one's tongue is lighter than what I usually see on brooks. Its bright reddish pink, rather than the typical dark red. I guess there could be a recessive trait controlling this look, or it could be line bred.

Something to me seems a little off about their look. Like the head is slightly elongated. Makes me wonder if speckled king is in the mix.

I'll try breeding either regular brooks or my sulfur to her and see what happens.

"Funny," i said the same thing to Brandon Osborne when i saw these the 1st time.

i.e. "They look like White-sided brooksi without the White-sides"... their dorsal pattern & even their faces have a similarity. Additonally their tongues are both pink.

The thing with the white-face ...or white-lipped ...or ..Bone white,,is the are not always white. All my male hypos are yellow. The females are the ones that get real white.

This is one of my males (I have 3 of the males)you can see the patternless side but they are yellow.

As you know I was one of two people (Don Shores was the other) who had these and we called them "Patternless sides" . Which for me, suits the morph better. But then I showed some people the females and they did not see the patternelss sides. So i switched the name to Bone White. ...AND yes I think the line from the Bells is different.

Here is a female. She has white spots on her. Not sure what that could mean (if anything)but I thought it was cool enough to take pics for Zenny (he likes this kind of stuff) :

This is a different female:

I used to have a Love hypo that had some of those white scales like you show there.

there is great potential for this morph/variation, beyond just producing more of them.

also: the 2nd female is a really impressive king.
