Larvae in my Red eye tree frogs tank?

mlieber214 Sep 06, 2003 11:27 PM

Has anyone ever found larvae in their frogs tank? I noticed tiny white worms in their yesterday. Do I need to worry? Almost looks as though they came from a cricket. Does this mean my frog is infected?

uh-oh,move your frogs out NOW!!! clean the tank, put a new substrait in. make sure you clean the tank EVERY day.get out unwanted food and bits of fruit, or anything that can rot, change the bedding about every too months (some people do it once a month but with my frogs, they get quite nervous and hide for a couple days) and put a screen lid over the top make sure no flies or bugs can get in there .

thanks for the quick response I am in the process of redoing his tank now. I still am quite confused how they got in there? Is it possible it cam from an adult cricket?

I think cricket larvae are too small to really see move around and all... maybe flies have gotten in there?

Try taking your frogs to a vet and see if they have parasites, too...

their is no cricket larvae, unless you mean a larvae thats living inside a cricket, but cricket eggs hatch out as tiny replicas of there parents, not larvaes.

I don't know why I put that. I think I combined two sentences or something and took out the middle?

I'm not sure what I was meaning to say about larvae, but I mean that the newborn crickets are so tiny and well-camoflauge that they're very hard to see moving in Bed-A-Beast... I can't believe I put that other thing there!

I remember someone here inquiring about their crickets having larvae in with the shipment they got in the mail. It could be something like that. If it is, someone on here told him they were harmless and they were kept with the crickets to eat the dead ones and their waste. Someone on here prob knows more, I just remember a thread a little while back and thought I may point you in the right direction.

Those larvae you speak of are large and dark brown or black. They have segmented bodies and fuzzy sides. They're from a beetle and supposedly eat dead crickets and waste matter.

They could be just what you said....'white worms'. Their pretty common in high humidity tanks. I think theyre decomposers, and i heard theyre harmless. (I also have them in some of my tanks)....clould you describe the worms a bit more? If theyre skinny, 3-4mm in length, white, and seem to look like theyre 'dancing' in your soil, than yea...they are harmless. Though, how do u know they came from your crickets?

Thank you for all your responses. These worms looked like baby maggots and were feasting on what appeared to be a dead cricket. I immediately cleaned out the entire cgae and my tree frog seems to be doing fine...I just never saw anything in there like that before. Thanks again all..the people in these forums are always so helpful.
