Racks and Vintilation Question

Joeycoco98 Oct 12, 2008 10:30 PM

Hello Experts,

I just got home with my racks so I was wondering if you guys drill holes in your tubs or if you rely on the space between each tub and the top of the rack. Thanks for any replies.

Thanks for reply. I love my Northerns they are the reason I got into Pits. Very seldom do they hiss and when they do it is only for a few seconds. I would defintely recommed getting a few. I started with one and now I have four.

If your racks are not ventilated by design, then definitely drill LOTS of holes-still, stagnant air is an invitation to disease. Since we switched to Vision racks, this chore (and it IS a chore-try drilling a hundred or so holes in each of 50 plastic tubs!) has become a thing of the past....

Yea I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning drilling holes. Definitely a CHORE!

I build my own racks and shoot for 1/8" gap between the top of the box and the shelf above.

The typical sweaterbox is 16 x 23 or therabouts. At 1/8" gap that's about 10 square inches of ventilation space, which is equal to about 800 1/8" holes. At least based on my quick math

In other words, it takes a lot of drilling to equal the space you have at the top of each tub.

I still drill holes but mostly to allow heavier than air gasses to escape.

Ok,then mine should be fine. There is definitely at least a 1/8 inch gap between the tub and the covering shelf. My tubs are 35x18x6 (actually bigger but I just listed the whole numbers). I still drilled holes so the ventilation should be more than sufficient. Thanks for the math lesson.

Thanks Chris. Started doing that a bit since I saw you post about it on The Cage Forum. Good to see you over here!
