Baytril Treats Respiratory Infections???

cardiacsmd Oct 13, 2008 12:11 PM

Hey guys, so one of my snakes has had a moderate URI and the other one is very minor. I went through a round of Amikacin and after the treatment the moderate one has absolutely NO wheezing anymore or stargazing but still has spit in his mouth. The minor one has very little popping noises when he breathes (not very often) but no spit. So I took them back to the vet and now he prescribed Baytril. Just curious, has anyone had any luck with Baytril, what were the doses, and how long until you saw improvement? Any comments will help ease my extreme anxiety. Thanks guys!

I used baytril years ago on Burms. Tylan may be easier on them and should not burn them. Also check temps on both sides of the snakes enclosure. I would not try to breed them this season.

I used an oral Baytril suspension (10mg/ml) once a day for 21 days on one of my female bloods when she had an RI. She was completely healthy in about 18 days, I saw first improvements within the first 10 days. That was .17cc's and she was around 500 grams at the time. Hasn't had any problems since, that was about 4-5 months ago.

Baytril is usually dosed at 5mg/kg for respiratory infections. It is inflammatory at the injection site (this means it HURTS the snake and it causes inflammation which is usually not apparent on a colored animal...but you can see it on an albino). Injections must be given in the cranial end of the body (the head end, like front one third of body) to avoid any potential damage to kidneys. It works great and will clear up problems in 10 days or so with adequate heat given at the same time. The dosage usually calls for injections every 2nd or 3rd day, but I will often give daily injections to ensure success. I was told by a vet that daily injections of Baytril is okay.

Is your vet giving you the syringes filled for dosing?

Good Luck...hope it clears up for you.

Yes the syringes are filled at 0.1 and I will give him one shot every 2 days for a total of ten shots. I feel really bad about hurting him, but it has to be done for the better of the snake. And plus, he is probably suffering more with the URI then with the shots. I did a round of Amikacin, and it took away his wheezing and stargazing but only brought him up to like 60% better not 100%. So I'm hoping that the Baytril knocks it off. :/

I have a 350gr ball on baytril suspension (oral meds, not injections) moderate RI is now hardly noticeable only a week later. Don't know anything about it burning in this form, but I know he doesn't like me forcing it down his throat:/
Vet wants to keep him on it for 30 days as the RI is a resistant strain - luckily it's sensitive to baytril
