Incubators, Rodents, Genetics..

JbuggFL Oct 14, 2008 08:54 AM

What do you guys find to be the most reasonably priced reliable incubators? Do a lot of you all use hovabators or do you build your own? I'm hopeing to produce about 8 clutchs this season and if they all drop at same time I want to be ready..

Where do you all get your rodents?? I use to breed rodents but my current living situation prohibits it. And $4.00 a small rat from the local petstore which is very small is killing me... I have a deep freezer and have been considering buying frozen I have only 12 snakes right now so I'd be buying probably about 100 or 150 rodents at a time..

I have a question about multiple male clutchs.. Has anyone breed lets say a pastel male and yellowbelly male to a normal female and produced a pastel yellowbelly? I have heard about getting both morph offsprings in the clutch just wondering if its possible for a baby to get both father genes??

Thanks and Goodluck to all this upcoming season!!!!!

8 clutches might be getting in the range where hovabators may not be the most conveniant. You'd need probably at least 4 hovabators to accomidate 8 clutches depending on clutch size.

Breeding your own is the best, IMHO...but in your case definately bying them in bulk like you mentioned would be next best case scenerio.

No, you wouldn't get a pastel yellowbelly from that.....you could get pastels AND yellowbelly's like you mentioned but thats as far as that goes.

Ok so what are the other options for incubation since hovabator isn't suffiecient????

Where do you all get your frozen rodents????? A few places I have checked after you add shipping its the same as the petstores unless you buy a mass quantity....

I would check locally for rats depending on where you are or else buy large amounts if you have to have them shipped.

Also a lot of people on KS seem to build their own incubator.

I live in Montgomery Alabama there isn't much for rodents or even snakes that I have found except the Dixie Show which is always nice... Does anyone have instuctions on how to build a incubator? I have a general idea but could you some specifics. I'd be building it out of either a mini fridge or a large rubbermaid cooler.. I have a thermostat. I know one guy who gutted a mini fridge out put a heat pad on the bottom of the fridge and hooked it to a helix is this exceptable? Do the eggs need air flow? Any tips are appreciated..
