This female is 34 inches long. Field guides say they can get up to 4 feet. This is the largest I've ever seen.

I have a florida blue like that, about the same, 34" long....I also have a melanistic eastern thats about 43" long

Very nice. I have a red-sided that's about 40", but she's pretty thin for a female.

And yeah, does have some checkered qualities but the color is off and doesn't have the right head markings.

Looks like a Florida eastern, whereabouts was it found?

Hey Scott,

It was found at a pet store, so I don't have any locality data. The store was selling it as a Checkered Garter, but that's not what it is (as the other person who posted said, it doesn't have the right head markings).

So it's either an Eastern or a Florida Blue - though I don't know how you'd tell them apart just by looking.

Several factors, one is size, The Florida's do get big.

Second coloration, in that final photo I can see the hues.

The markings on the Florida variety seem more defined than on the northern species.

It certainly looks Florida.
