There's Super Stripes and there are ...

SUPER STRIPES!! This morph varies alot, similiar to how Genetic Stripes vary.. Some say "the gene is the gene" but in the case of Super Stripes and likely even Genetic Stripes I don't think that is the case.. I think in the case of some projects you totally "get what you pay for".. Here is a good pic of the upper end of how a regular Super Stripe should look! Hope you like the pic, Anthony McCain..

Anthony,

I completly agree, I baleive you get what you pay for. The only case I may find this not to be true are Pieds and Calico's/Sugars. Either way, why not spend the extra money to get something that is really going to stand out.

Genetics control most everything so having no idea what goes into making the best super pastel I would assume genetics are the top candidate.

However, with genetic stripe I'm not so sure. A guy near me has a nice pair of genetic stripes. The first year he bred them all the babies had a lot of side pattern. You could tell they weren’t normals but they didn't look like text book genetic stripes either. The next clutch from the SAME pair every baby was much better striped than the best one from the first clutch. What changed? It couldn't have been the genetics. I thought maybe incubation temp but I've seen a post from a breeder who reports to have experimented with a range of genetic stripe incubation temps and not seen temps effect the stripe quality. Sure it could have just been luck but the two clutches where soo different I have to believe there is some sort of environmental or conditioning variable; I just don't know what it could be.

On that same note I have produced super stripes that have full stripes and broken stripes from the same animals. Either way all the animals that I produce the full stripe or broken super stripe come from all the same line. So it would be hard to say whether one line would not have varied results in regards to a broken stripe or a full stripe. I think it's nice for a line to have the ability to produce both. That way you can cater to everyone.

jared horenstein hatched 3 superstripes three years in a row '04, '05, and '06 (that i know of at least) and all three were perfectly striped? ive seen a pic of all three in one pic....

his line of "specter/whirlwind" combined with his line of yellowbelly seem to be pretty consistent, but maybe his line of specters combined with other lines of yellowbelly will not produce such perfect stripes so consistently? the side patterning is also variable between specimens from different lines, but jared's threess's were quite similar and consistent as far as the side patterning is concerned. if you ask me, the side patterning, thck perfect stripe, and black bordering are favorably pleasing to me personally compared to many other superstripes i have seen n pics hatched out by others.

But just to play devils advocate, maybe Jared consistently fed his rats the same vitamin supplemented food or incubated at the same temperature/humidity or some other external variable that makes good super stripes. It's probably genetic but those two very different genetic stripe clutches from the same parents got me thinking there could be other influences too.
