Vanilla?

Alfonso Oct 15, 2008 11:34 PM

I bought this male last year in the Daytona show as a Vanilla, I was 100% sure he was but now looking at some of the Vanilla pictures that are out there, I noticed the head on my Vanilla is not as bold "light" as some others but it is lighter as you can see in the picture, it also have the head a little more squiny and long than usual.
What do you guys think?

Alfonso

Is his shed clear or can you see his pattern in it, I have been told that when vanillas shed you can not see any of their pattern in the shed. but then again i could have been misinformed?

If I carefully look at the shed and I look for the paterns, Yes I can see them, he just came out of a shed couple of days ago, and I still have the shed.
Thanks.

Looks like a Vanilla, who did it come from ? I have several Vanillas and have not noticed they shed clear (apart from my hypo Vanilla) so I don't think that's correct about the shed skin.

cheers, John

I bought him from Shawn and Amy at Stickyfeet Exotics (Great people)Wellington, Florida.
I will breed him this season with a couple of normals and maybe with a Pastel.
What will the babies look like? If anybody has pics of babies I will appreciate.

Alfonso,

It does look like a vanilla in my opinion. The thing is, the vanilla trait is effected big time on the normal genes involved. Breed a vanilla to light females and produce screamers that nobody will ever question, or breed to dark females and get not so great examples of the morph. I do know that the individuals you bought from have one if the first super males ever released to the public so if yours came from that male it has to be a vanilla, no questions asked. Here is my original pair of vanilla's to show how they can vary. Both are stunning examples but the female came out of a high orange breeding that has passed on to her.

that stripe?

That is a beautiful snake with a lot of potential if the color and pattern are both genetic.

Any idea yet?

Congratulations

Unknown at this time. This male came from a clutch that produced vanillas, super vanillas and normals. ALL WERE STRIPED. They were housed in an incubator with many other clutches and no other clutch exhibited striping (even clutches laid and hatched on the same day) which almost rules out temp spikes. I have held back every female that he has produced (normal and vanilla) and will hopefully get a chance to breed him back to a daughter this season or definately next. Either way, he is one beautiful vanilla and makes some awesome babies.

One easy, and fooproof way to find out....breed him, and see if he produces Vanilla babies.

Alfonso,
Its Shawn from StickyFeet.

I talked to Chris from Gulf Coast about my vanilla babies and took some examples to show him at Daytona and Tampa. He looked at them and was surprised by how dark some were. He told me about the breeding of darker females and the possibilty of maybe a second gene mixed in with some of the babies which darkens them up. I used what I thought was normal females, but some were dark and some were light. I had some male babies come out so normal looking Im just selling them to pet stores as CBs. The gist of the conversation was you have to be selective.

After speaking with him I decided I will no longer breed my male to normal females so I have a limited number of just vanillas, and focus on pastel vanillas and should have vanilla 100% het clowns this year.

He also looked at my super vanilla and told me that he is one of the best, if not the best super produced so far. He is even lighter than in 07 when you saw him. He is my pride and joy of my collection.

Hope all is well and good luck with the breeding.

Interesting to say the least. I know the Vanillas, Fires, and now Sulfurs have always been thought of as morphs that look kind of normal, but I CAN pick out a Sulfur from a new clutch, with ease. Maybe I have just gotten lucky, and somehow not bred the Sulfur into a light enough female, to possibly be stumped as to what is what, but the Sulfurs all have a nice distinct head pattern. So do Fires right? So Vanillas do not have a head or belly pattern that is obvious enough to use as a marker? While I always liked the Super Vanilla, and thought about getting one, I will have to rethink that.

Hello Shawn,
Thank you for the comments and recommendation, I might just do the same and breed him with a light normal and a pastel and see what happen, as you can see he is more then ready for the girls, the pair of cinnamons are doing great as well.
Thanks again and say Hi to Amy.

Alfonso
