What active snakes are out there? I have a cali kingsnake who hides underground under the water bowl 6 times per week.

I'm looking for something more out in the open and active for a snake, if you will. This includes pythons too =D.

Somebody else here will be more qualified to answer your question fully but I wanted also to mention that this sometimes can change from snake to snake. I also have a california kingsnake and it's probably more active than any of my others!

What is your setup like for your kingsnake? and how long has it been in there? Is it in a busy part of the house?

If it's a new snake he may take a while to settle in, and more physical cover (branches, plants, etc) may encourage him to spend more time out and about. That being said, sometimes you just get a nervous snake. I've seen kings that spend all day cruising about and others who spend all their time under a hide as you've described.

Probably the most active snakes I've kept are various garters with rat snakes being a close second. But again, this is merely a generality rather than a rule. Others may have had different experiences and can offer more advice.

Haha, I was wondering when you would pipe in and say garters! I totally agree though, they are extremely alert and active the vast majority of the time. There are many who think garters in general are just too "plain" and boring just because they're so common. If you look around though there are so many varieties available you'll most likely find one that you simply _MUST_ have!

Gartersnakes are a great choice for an active and inquisitive snake that is easily maintained.

Another one is Indigo or Cribos, but geez they eat alot and poop alot.

Most of the available CB colubrids would rather hide more than not. In fact, that is true of most snakes.

If you want active, get a Cairn terrier (dog). You will appreciate the hiding snake after that.

I have three kings that are fairly active: a Cali, a thayeri and a grey-banded. The thayeri and Cali both crawl right out of their tubs and onto my hands when I open them and seem to enjoy being held. The grey-band is starting to get that way, too.

As for pythons, my jungle carpet is very active and inquisitive.
