It looks like a gray/black rat to me. Chances anywhere in eastern NA of finding a gray/black rat juvenile very high. Chances of finding an aneury corn?? 1/1000 or 1/10000 or 1/100,000? It still looks like a nice snake.

Best wishes
Bob

All you have to do is look at the belly, if its checkered its a corn if not a rat snake....TC

freeman77 Oct 16, 2008 08:57 PM

the belly is checkered i will try to get a pic
could anyone post pics of what the belly should look like

anuraanman Oct 16, 2008 09:08 PM

the top photo I found on the web and shows the belly of a cornsnake. The second photo shows part of the underside of a black ratsnake. I have seen rats that have what looks like a checkered belly but it is much less organized than on corns AND with rats the underside is usually white under the head and neck with dark marks starting about a 5th of the way down the body and increasing in density toward the tail. Under the tail is usually almost black because the dark markings take up 100% of the space.

I'm linking to the second image because of its large dimensions.

Definitely not a corn snake, and for a reason that none of the others mentioned. The snake lacks the "spear point" on the top of the head. Combine that with the belly, and corn is ruled out.

There is a small part of south Florida where "black corns" are comparatively common. If that snake was found outside that limited area, chances are it is not. Point being, noting location of origin, even with a picture, can be of some value.
