in the state of California...are the numbers you can keep restricted? Since they are all classified as "the same critter" with locale differences, how many can one person have in California, if anyone knows. Just curious. (Lurk lurk)

Well, they really aren't all classified as the same, just the Eastern, non desert and reticulated, or so I think, but Eve says there are a few more. C. Bicintores, C. Nebrius, C reticularis, and C. Vestigium at least are all "officially" classfied as separate species. These are the desert collareds. The Bicintores and vestigiums can be found in California, the Nebrius and Bicintores can be found in the Sonoran desert, and the reticularis is only found in south Texas/N. Mexico. They are endangered or threatened.
Kinda makes your head spin, don't it?
Maureen, you need a collared or two. They really are cute, friendly and unique.
C. collaris
C. dickersonae
C. vestigium
C. bicinctores
C. grismeri
C. reticulatus
C. insularis
C. antiquus

Thanks! I forgot about the dickerson's,and need to look up the rest. What a diverse family!
Eve, You should write a book about collared lizards, or maybe an article for reptiles magazine. I'd buy it!

Your Sweet, lol, I have much to learn my friend, MUCH. It never ends, always NEW problems arise when ya think ya have it down, hehehehe.
No room for COCKY-NESS or Acting as if I know it all, that's what I think is wrong with some forums, and the reason for fighting and such.
I have learned the most by observing my gang over the years, but have also learned from many many good herpers. And one of the most important things I have learned is...
*** YOUR NEVER DONE LEARNING

I'm not from CA and don't know for sure, but didn't someone mention once that you're not allowed to collect/own/sell native Californian collared species? You can have eastern species, but not the locals? Just something that tickled my brain when I read the question.

Torey
Eugene, Oregon, USA
1.1 Saharan Uros (Joe and Arthur)
3.0 Mali Uros (Spike, Turtle, and Tank)
1.1 Ornate Uros (Scuttlebutt and Shazzbot)
1.1 Collared Lizard (Ripcord and Rorschach)
2.0 Green Anoles (Bowser and Sprocket)
1.1 Chubby Housecats (Roscolux and Jenny)

I think in California, you are allowed to have the species from your state, only a certain number, BUT you are NOT allowed to SELL the native lizards.
Someone from there can fill us in on the exact law.

That sounds right if you go by the laws on other native California reptiles--a certain number you can have, no selling, bag limits. But you could give the lil tykes away-ay-yay!
Hi there,
As of earlier this year, you could keep (2) bicintores and (2) vestigium per household per year, or something like that. The way I interpreted it was you could collect 2 individuals per year. After the year is up, you can collect 2 more. You can't sell those species here in CA. You certainly CAN give your offspring away, so you always have that avenue. I'm sure some folks here would be only TOO HAPPY to take the little guys off your hands.

Hope I helped!

Thanks a jillion!!
You can keep 2 C. bicinctores and 2 C. vestigium and as many of the other species(except C. reticulatus) as you like since they don't occur in California.
