Making Large Holes in PVC

bakeaway Oct 16, 2008 10:39 PM

I need to make a holein my PVC cage large enough for a 8" dome light to sit on.
I know the Unibit is great for small holes. but what about large ones?
Thanks

A protractor and a jigsaw are probably your best bet.

How "pretty" do you want this hole to be, and what kind of tools do you have available?

Also, what is the thickness of the pvc?

it is 3/8" thick,,and it does not have to be pretty,,,i pretty much just have a drill,,,but can get hold of a few more tools if needed...

I would go with tokays suggetion then, if you can get access to a jig saw.

Rotozip and circle jig...

Or Dremal XPR400 and jig...

XPR400 is a good tool just to have, wise investment.

Rotozip or Dremel. They each have the speed needed plus an attachment for cutting circles in this material. Or just use jig.

I drew the circle on the plastic using a lid I found that was of reasonable size. Then I bought an inexpensive jig saw and got a narrow blade made for plastic.

Although my unsteady hand did not cut a perfect circle, by employing a rounded file to touch up some areas, it turned out decent. So there is hope for you. I do agree with the others that a Dremel and circle jig is a great way to do the job.
