Poll: What substrate do you use for your leos?

peregrinefalcon Sep 07, 2003 09:40 AM

I just want to see what the majority of the people of this forum keep their leos on. Please don't respond to another persons post telling them why they shouldn't use the substrate, just answer with what you use.

I have my leo in a wooden cage so I just use the floor of the cage and pieces of rock and slate.

I use papertowels and on their humid hide side a have a larger piece of tile so the UTH and light combined heats it up not a low like a heat rock so a little and my leos love it. BUt I use papertowels for all of my setups. Much easier.

I use ceramic tiles. Most of my tanks are the fancy terrariums with sliding screen tops. They come with a hole in the botton for i guess a heat rock cord etc. So i have put some *sticky* tile over the hole and on about 2/3 the glass so the ceramic tile doesn't scratch (one tank is badly scratched all along the bottom edge of the sides ) The part left with just ceramic tile is where i attach the UTH. Once the gecko has decided where the bathroom is i put a few layers of papertowel.

My crested gecko tank has nothing on the bottom as its easier to clean for me instead of taking him out everytime he poops so i could change the papertowels.

I actually use the ground walnut particle based substrate on my adult "show" leos which are my oldest ones that I got when I first got into leos. They are fully grown adults now and Ive been keeping it on that substrate for a long time now and Ive never had any impaction problems. These setups are for show in aquariums with rocks and fake cacti and all of that stuff.
All of my breeders and babies are kept on the racks in tubs. The adults are just in the tubs with no bottoms and the babies are on paper towels becuase they are pooping machines! Anyone else ever used the particle based ground walnut shells? I know that they swallow it all the time becuase you can see one or two pieces in the feces, but like I said, Ive been keeping 3 geckos on it for years and they pass it easily every single time. Any one else???

I used the walnut shell bedding about 2 years ago and I had a sub adult die of impaction from it. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone, but if you havent had any problems for 3 years then I must've just had bad luck. The male I had die from it was a small male, about 7 1/2 inches and 40 grams. The walnut bedding was really sharp and when he ingested it, it had cut his intestine up and caused internal bleeding. He had also ingested quite a bit. That's just my experience with it...

I use paper towels, but I keep so much stuff in the tank anyway that the substrate doesn't really stand out.

Here's a pic of my 20L.

i have used sand for 2 years with no problems

bradley Sep 07, 2003 02:32 PM

I would use a rocky/sand substrate with a bunch of various sizes of rocks, some narled wood, and a few desert plants. I believe this would look the most natural, much better then slate or papertowels. You can even simulate a "rainstorm" every few months and the substrate will have a crust which will get somewhat hard.

I use newspaper.. though after the move I'm setting up their tank with slate and large gravel.. rocks hides and hopefully a rock pool..

lg1990 Sep 07, 2003 06:37 PM

I use paper towels for all my leos, I am the kind of person that would rather have my leos be safe rather than risk ingestion using sand.
