When should i be worried?

mattciupak Oct 17, 2008 05:11 PM

My BRB has this brown "thing" behind her right eye. I think, not really sure, it's a piece of the substrate. i tried to let her slip through my hands so maybe it would come off, but it feels something like a scab, and it didn't come off. I didn't want to do anything further, so I don't hurt her. I can show pics, but they probably won't show it too well.
Thanks for any help.

OK, the obvious questions......

Do you have mites? Mite bites can get infected and they do tend to congregate on the head area. Obvious short term solution is get rid of the mites.

Do you feed live prey? The prey while almost always losing the battle can get a bite or two in and inflict damage. If it is a rodent bite will most likely heal on it's own.

Is your snake eating and otherwise looking healthy? No signs of RI or listlessness? Any sign of other illness indicates immediate vet visit!!

If no other bad signs...

Switch substrate to paper type products until you know what's going on.

Closely inspect the area, looking for any inflamation, pus or anything else that would make you believe it's infected, if infected, see a vet!!!

Does it look like a scab? If so may be a healing wound - bite, rub or???

A pic from the side would be helpful

i am using Eco-Earth, and i had to soak it in water to expand it from the pack it was in. i am pretty sure there were no mites and if there were any they would have died. i will switch it to newspaper.
I feed her f/t rat pinks
she feeds great. never aggressive.
by the way, i never saw this before, so im thinking it was recent, and i fed her on wednesday, and only took her out today.
