Getting a greek tort!

derekdehaas Oct 18, 2008 09:54 PM

Never posted here before and i am always on the snake forums. I am getting a greek tort for my wife and I am getting a female greek from Charles Abbott. I have a few questions. Here goes.
First of all i want to say that we have research a lot on torts for the past 2 years but I still want to learn as much i can to proper care for our upcoming greek.
1. I am not sure whatever i am going to make a tort table or use a 74qt sterlite tote box but all i need to know is what do i should use for a bedding?

2. Can i use a spot bulb from a hard ware store? I feel that the so call reptile basking bulb sold at pet stores is a rip off and is same as any bulbs.

3. Lastly can anyone tell or give me a good site on greeks og their basic care to keep them healthy?
Thanks for your help.

You do realize Kingsnake has a Russian/Greek tortoise site, just a click away? Slow lately, but collectively, some good information.

Check out various turtle and tortoise clubs. San Diego Turtle & Tortoise Society has good info, also California Turtle and tortoise club. Check out Tortoise trust, read Andy Highfield's articles.

Stay in contact with the breeder and glean information. Usually if someone is breedig them, they have aquired better than average husbandry skills and can teach you a lot... good luck with your new T. greaca, they are hardy and fun. Vic H.

Vic yes i know that there is a greek section but had a feeling that it's slow. I have looked all of the pages on there and I just wanted a fresh info for myself.
A greek that we are getting is coming from Charles Abbott. Which is good.
Thanks.

Hi, for heat any old bulb will do. You realize you need a uvb bulb of some sort right? The ZooMed Reptisun 10.0 is a good uv tube light. Alternatively you could go with a mercury vapor bulb like the megaray (www.reptileuv.com) or a ZooMed Powersun (readily available at most pet store for big $$$ or online for cheaper). The mercury vapor bulbs put out heat and uvb in one nice unit but they are pricier.

Take care,
Carole
